Thank you for your interest in the Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership (IGEL). The application for the 2020 IGEL Class is now closed.   The application period ended at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14. 

The application for the 2021 IGEL class will be made available next summer. When the application period is open and the application is available, an "Apply Now" button will display below.  If you would like to be added to our list of interested individuals and receive notification when the application is available, please go here.

IGEL's goals are:

  • Fostering a deeper understanding of Georgia's environmental issues;
  • Providing a safe forum for participants to explore each other's views and motivations; and
  • Engaging participants in key aspects of leadership, such as creative problem solving; and conflict resolution, building trust and enhancing communication skills.

By applying, you agree that you understand the goals of IGEL and that you are required to attend all 5 sessions of the IGEL program.  Dates for the upcoming class can be found to the right, in the calendar, and you're encouraged to keep the IGEL Cancellation Policy in mind.  To browse through the application before you go on-line to complete it, please click here.

Letters of recommendation are welcome, but not required, and will be accepted up until the application deadline. Recommendations received after the due date will not be considered. Letters can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed directly to IGEL, Inc., P.O. Box 18841, Atlanta, GA 31126.



Each year, we have more qualified individuals interested in participating than can be accepted in each year’s class ...

  • A selection committee, consisting of IGEL graduates and members of its Board of Directors, reviews all applications to select 30-35 participants in the next IGEL program; please know that we endeavor to make each and every class as diverse as possible and seek to select class members with a wide range of geographies, professions, interests, political viewpoints, and other qualities that will reflect the rich diversity of our state.
  • If you are selected to join the next IGEL class, you will be notified prior to the end of the application year.

If you completed an IGEL application last year and would like to be considered for the upcoming class ...

  • Please complete a new application to ensure that all responses are complete and current.
  • You may email Molly Nuttall ([email protected]with your current contact information to request a copy of your previous application for your reference, and we will be happy to forward it to you.

IGEL recognizes that many strong candidates—particularly civic and community leaders—are unable to secure the full amount of tuition ...

  • The Selection Committee is delighted to be able to offer a limited number of need-based partial scholarship opportunities to accepted applicants. These scholarships, made possible through generous corporate, foundation and individual gifts, help enhance the diversity of participants.
  • The Cox Conserves Community Environmental Leader Scholarship provides full tuition for a “community partner,” who is an employee or member of nonprofit organization, public agency, government office, or school where integral services are provided to meet a real community need.
  • Additional partial scholarships are also available, usually for up to 50% of the tuition amount.  Awards are based upon need taking into account both the resources of the selected applicant and their organization.
